Moths of North Dakota

Common name: Elm sphinx/ Four-horned caterpillar.

Hodges #: 7786.

Identification: Rfw 44.4 mm, fws paler along base of costal margin, outer margin slightly concave near tornus, hws without white markings, abdomen with broken diagonal dark lines and some white but no defined bands or spots. Moth often more grayish than specimen illustrated.

Similar species: 7787.

Distribution: southern Canada and United States east of the Rockies.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Ulmus– elms, rarely on Tilia– basswood, and Betula– birch.
