Sphinx gordius Cramer 1780

Common name: Apple sphinx.

Hodges #: 7810.

Identification: Rfw 32.1 mm, fws pale with darker costa and tornus, hws with broad black marginal band before fringe, ventral wings crossed by median dark band.

Similar species: 7796, 7809, 7810.1, 7811, 7812- see key.

Distribution: northern U.S. and southern Canada, mostly east of the Rockies, additional records along east coast to Florida and in the Rockies to Colorado.

Hosts: Larvae feed on  Malus-- apple, Rosa-- rose, and Fraxinus-- ash.
