Pachysphinx modesta (Harris 1839)
| Common name: Big poplar sphinx.
Hodges #: 7828. Identification: Rfw 48.2 mm, outer margin crenulate, wing pattern of transverse shades of gray or shades of brown, fw lacks irregular pale triangle at tornus, hw dark red, pro-tibia with fused setae forming an apical 'claw.' Similar species: 7822, 7824, 7829. Distribution: southern Canada and United States, in the west more restricted to mountainous areas. Hosts: Larvae feed on Populus-- poplar, cottonwood, aspen,
and Salix-- willow. |
