Deidamia inscriptum (Harris 1839)

Common name:  Lettered sphinx

Hodges #: 7871.

Identification: Rfw 20.1 mm, fw outer margin irregularly toothed, hws nearly uniform coppery-brown.  Moth without bright colors.

Similar species: 7873.

Distribution: eastern United States and southern Canada.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Parthenocissus spp.-- Virginia creeper/ woodbine, Vitis spp.-- grape, and Ampelopsis spp.-- pepper-vine.

Note:  The species flies before dawn.  In ND it is the first sphingid of the season.
