The sun angle snow is the equivalent of the middle of October. What that means is the sun now can easily heat up a road surface to 32 degrees or warmer on most days, even when temperatures are around zero. With our snow not capped and easily blown around, the warmth on the roads can cause the snow to melt and refreeze on afternoons with enough wind to move the snow around. Most people call this “blow ice” as it is ice caused by blowing snow. I tend to call late February through March blow ice and we will likely have problems with blow ice off and on for the next several weeks. Until the snow is gone, icy roads can occur suddenly this time of year.
