First 50

March is the month when the first 50 degree high of the season often occurs.  Most of you have experienced both the earliest 50 degree day of the season when the high hit 55 degrees on January 5 2012 and the latest 50 degree day when the first 50 of the year did not occur until April 26 a year later in 2013.  The overall average is for the first 50 degree high to occur in mid-March, with March 16th the exact date in Fargo.  With all of this snow on the ground, the odds of hitting 50 degrees or higher anytime soon are near zero, but even in the extremely snowy winter of 1996-1997 the first 50 occurred on April 1.  Patterns can change quickly as we all know.
