NDSU beef cattle winter management workshops set

Beef cattle producers will have an opportunity in November to learn more about winter management options for their livestock. The NDSU Extension Service has scheduled Beef Cattle Winter Management workshops at four North Dakota locations. All times are local:

  • Nov. 12 - Fireside Restaurant, Ellendale, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Nov. 12 - American Legion, Medina, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Nov. 13 - Wing Theater, Wing, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Nov. 13 - Fairgrounds, Carson, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Topics to be covered and presenters are:

  • “What does colostrum have to do with stewardship? Building cow colostrum quality during winter feeding for healthier spring calves” – Gerald Stokka, NDSU Extension livestock stewardship specialist and veterinarian
  • “Alternative winter feeding strategies” – Mary Berg, area Extension livestock environmental management specialist, NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center
  • “Shelterbelts as living windbreaks” – Craig Stange, Natural Resources Conservation Service
  • “Body condition scoring for cow herds” – county Extension agents
  • “Feeding for energy” – Chanda Engel, research specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
  • “Water management” – Karl Hoppe, area Extension livestock systems specialist, Carrington Research Extension Center
  • “Vaccine handling and storage” – Lisa Pederson, NDSU Extension beef qualityspecialist, Bismarck
  • "Hay bale management” – Fara Brummer, area Extension livestock systems specialist, NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center

Registration is $15 per person if paid by Nov. 1 or $25 per person after that date. The cost for beef quality assurance certification or recertification is an additional $15 per operation. Four American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists continuing education credits are available.
