Ryan Compton, associate professor of economics at the University of Manitoba and adjunct associate professor at the University of Victoria's School of Public Administration, is scheduled to give the Capitalism and Society lecture Thursday, Nov. 6, at 4:15 p.m. in the Ag Country Auditorium located in Barry Hall room 140. Compton's lecture is titled “What is economic freedom anyway and why should I care?” The lecture is open to all Tri-College University students and faculty as well the public.

In his lecture, Compton will discuss the concept of economic freedom and present an overview of the findings in the literature, including his own studies, on the consequences of economic freedom.

Compton earned a doctorate in economics at Washington University in St. Louis, where he also completed a certificate program in new institutional economics. His research agenda explores the various effects of economic freedom on such important items as economic growth, social capital, income inequality and the black-white income gap.

The Capitalism and Society lecture series seeks to bring scholars to the Fargo-Moorhead area who can address issues dealing with the moral and ethical foundations of capitalism and free markets as an economic system. The lecture will be relevant for a general audience with no detailed knowledge of economics required.

The series is sponsored jointly by the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics and the College of Business at NDSU, and is organized by Jeremy Jackson, assistant professor of agribusiness and applied economics.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
