NDSU faculty member honored by weed science society

Kirk Howatt, associate professor of weed science, was presented the Outstanding Teacher Award during the Weed Science Society of America annual meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. The peer-selected award recognizes excellent teaching and advising of students. 

Howatt has been a faculty member in the Department of Plant Sciences at NDSU since 1999. He serves as coordinator of the crop and weed sciences academic program. In addition, Howatt conducts research on weeds in cereals and oilseed crops, teaches courses in weed science and professional development, advises students and serves as the Agronomy Club adviser.

Howatt has received a number of honors for teaching and advising. The Mid America CropLife Association recognized him as the 2011 Educator of the Year. He received two NDSU College of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Natural Resources awards – the William J. and Angelyn A. Austin Advising Award in 2011 and the H. Roald and Janet Lund Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013. He also received the North Central Weed Science Society Distinguished Achievement Award in Education in 2014.
