Feedlot research, cow-calf studies and forage crops are the main topics of the beef production tour set for July 14 at NDSU's Carrington Research Extension Center.
The tour will begin at 9 a.m. with registration, coffee and a welcome. The program will run until noon.
Topics and speakers include:
- Winter rye, oats and hairy vetch for livestock haying and grazing - Steve Zwinger, agronomy research specialist at the center
- Feeding calves to finish: Dakota Feeder Calf Show and North Dakota Angus University - Karl Hoppe, area Extension livestock specialist
- Producer experiences in retained ownership programs - Shane and Mike Wendell, Angus producers from LaMoure, North Dakota
- Forage level and corn particle size in finishing diets - Chanda Engel, animal science research specialist at the center
- Tempering corn grain for feedlot rations - Engel
- Barley or corn with medium- or low-fat corn distillers grains diets - Kendall Swanson, NDSU professor of animal sciences
- Pasture vs. drylot cow herd production systems research - Engel
- Drylot cow herd economics - BillieJo Shae, North Dakota Farm Business Management instructor, Minot, North Dakota
In addition, Hoppe will provide a body condition scoring demonstration, Engel will discuss matching feeds with feed analyses and Rob Maddock, Extension meats specialist with the NDSU animal sciences department, will talk about why consumers prefer the taste of beef.
The beef production program is one of four tours being offered during the Carrington Research Extension Center's annual field day July 14. The other tours will focus on agronomy, horticulture and sustainability. All of them start at 9 a.m.
