Advance FORWARD announces appointment of first advocates

SHARE

The FORWARD Allies and Advocates steering committee has selected eight faculty men as the first advocates in the Advance FORWARD project. The advocates are Eugene Berry, associate professor of veterinary and microbiological sciences; Kevin Brooks, associate professor of English; Tom Carlson, assistant professor of child development and family science; Doğan Çömez, professor of mathematics; Roger Green, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; Mark Meister, associate professor of communication; Larry Peterson, professor of history; and Mark Sheridan, professor of biological sciences.

The role of an advocate is to be an active proponent of gender diversity and equality and to support female faculty members in departments, colleges and the university. Advocates also are responsible for providing training for male faculty who volunteer to be allies and for working closely with the allies group. An external trainer who has expertise in advocacy and gender will train the inaugural eight advocates.

No formal application is required for male faculty who are interested in becoming allies. To volunteer as an ally in the Advance FORWARD project, watch for announcements about allies training. Additional expectations for allies are available at www.ndsu.edu/forward under the Advance FORWARD Initiatives section.
