Music artist-in-residence to give concert

A concert featuring NDSU Challey School of Music Artist-in-Residence Jocelyn Hagen is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Hagen, an award-winning composer, is scheduled to be joined by several guest artists, including:

• David Walton, tenor

• Erik Barsness, percussion

• Timothy C. Takach, composer/vocalist

• Spearfisher, electronic musician/composer/pianist

• NDSU Madrigal Singers and soloists Michael Fairbairn and Briana Moynihan

• Tyler Wottrich, pianist, and Benton Schmidt, pianist

Hagen, who is a native of Valley City, North Dakota, primarily composes for voice, including solo, chamber and choral. She earned degrees in theory, composition and vocal music education from St. Olaf College, and her master's degree in composition from the University of Minnesota. She also studied at the European American Musical Alliance in Paris. She currently resides in Minneapolis.

As a performer, Hagen began playing piano at three years old and was a professional accompanist by the age of 15. In 2000, she won first place in the Klatzkin Contemporary Keyboard Competition at Arizona State University.

Hagen has received numerous grants and awards, including ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, Minnesota Music Educators Association, McKnight Foundation, Yale Glee Club, Lotte Lehman Foundation, Sorel Medallion Competition, Cincinnati Camerata and San Francisco Song Festival.

Her commissions include Conspirare, the Minnesota Orchestra, the North Dakota Music Teacher’s Association, Cantus, the Boston Brass, the American Choral Directors Associations of Minnesota, Georgia, Connecticut and Texas; and the ensembles at NDSU.

Hagen's work is independently published through JH Music, Graphite Publishing, G. Schirmer, Santa Barbara Music Publishing, Fred Bock Music Publishing, and Boosey and Hawkes.
