Food science program gets review board approval

The NDSU food science program has been re-approved for five years by the Institute of Food Technologies Higher Education Review Board. The approval means the NDSU program offers courses and degree options that meet the institute’s Undergraduate Education Standards for Degrees in Food Science, which include specific administrative and physical standards and core and food science course offerings.

A total of 64 universities worldwide have approved undergraduate programs. NDSU has been approved since 2005, and has been re-approved every five years as required by the institute.

The education standards were developed to ensure students graduating with a bachelor’s degree in food science are prepared for professional development and scientific research in food industries worldwide.

Clifford Hall, NDSU food science program coordinator, said, “The benefit of approval is that those in the food industry looking to hire new graduates will know that NDSU students meet the same high level of education and experience as all approved schools.”

The Institute of Food Technologies’ mission is to advance the science of food and its application across the global food system. It was established in 1939 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has more than 17,000 members from 95 countries.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
