Alumnus named weed science society president

NDSU alumnus Greg Dahl, a research manager for product development at WinField United, was named president of the North Central Weed Science Society at the organization’s 71st annual meeting Dec. 15. He will serve until the next annual meeting in December 2017.

The crop protection industry organization covers Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming and the Canadian province of Ontario.

“There are many issues for the NCWSS to deal with,” said Dahl, BS ’80, MS ’84, agronomy. “We have resistant weeds. We also have the new dicamba technologies hitting the market, which will create opportunities to do great things. But we will need to practice stewardship like we never have before — doing our very best to keep chemicals in the right place and ensuring they stay where farmers put them.”

Dahl has been with WinField United — the seed, crop protection products, agricultural services and agronomic insights business of Land O’Lakes Inc. — since 1997. He has coordinated and conducted experiments in the areas of adjuvants, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, seed treatments and micronutrients. His research has led to the introduction of more than 50 new or improved products.

Dahl has been an active member of the society and North Central Weed Control Conference since 1981, and he was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Industry Award in 2011.

Dahl previously worked for the NDSU Extension Service and the American Cyanamid Co.
