Poverty simulation registration open

The campus community is invited to participate in NDSU’s next poverty simulation, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Plains room.

Participants must stay for the entire session.

Registration is now open to participate in the interactive experience, where participants will learn the complexities of life for persons in poverty. The simulation enables attendees to view poverty from different angles in an experiential setting.

“During the simulation, participants role-play the lives of low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on Social Security,” explained Hailey Goplen, assistant director for service learning and civic engagement. “The task of each family is to provide food, shelter and other basic necessities during the simulation while interacting with various community resources.”

Early registration is encouraged and spots are limited. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 10.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
