Interior design student wins national competition

Lindsay Knott, a senior majoring in interior design with a business minor, was named a corporate student merit winner in the Source One Design Competition. Knott won the national design competition with a wall covering that was inspired by childhood games, which she says is a fun contrast to a corporate environment. She used a modern twist on the traditional games of marbles and jacks to create the whimsical, geometric pattern.

“It was very unexpected, but I was very excited when I found out,” Knott said. “It was flattering to know that out of hundreds of designs, mine stood out. I give credit to our professor, Susan Ray-Degges, who encouraged all of us to enter, even though the odds seemed slim.”

There were two categories in the competition. Hospitality design included entries for places like restaurants and hotels. Corporate design included entries for offices. Award-winning designers Bob Lehrmitt and Sharon Drinkwine of Lehrmitt Associates selected the winning entries based on design innovation, aesthetics, originality and suitability for intended use.

Entering the competition last fall, Knott competed with students from the University of Texas at Arlington; The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.; and Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Wallcovering Source D.L. Couch, Eykon and TRI-KES sponsored the competition. “Source One believes in the importance of providing educational tools to young designers,” said Randy Scholes, Source One brand manager. “In addition to design competitions like this, local Source One representatives visit colleges and universities throughout the year. They present the features and benefits of using wall covering and show the very latest in design and color trends.”

Source One is one of the most specific commercial wall coverings in the United States. For more information on Source One, go to www.sourceonewallcovering.com.

Knott, originally from Raymond, Minn., is expected to graduate this May. She plans to move to Minneapolis/St. Paul to find a job.
