An NDSU Press author has been named a finalist in the 27th annual Midwest Book Awards. John P. Bluemle, who wrote “North Dakota’s Geologic Legacy: Our Land and How It Formed,” is a finalist in the Nature category.

“Bluemle’s expertise as a geologist and his affection for the northern plains landscape shine in this beautiful book. We are most pleased to have his life’s work recognized by the judges of this competitive award,” said Suzzanne Kelley, NDSU Press editor-in-chief.

Winners will be announced at the Midwest Book Awards Gala, scheduled for May 12 in St. Paul, Minnesota. The competition, sponsored by the Midwest Independent Publishing Association, is judged by writers, editors, librarians, teachers and book designers. They select award winners and finalists based on overall excellence. This year's awards, all books published in 2016 by Midwest publishers, attracted 192 titles for a total of 297 entries in 30 categories.

North Dakota’s Geologic Legacy is designed for the physical and the armchair traveler. Bluemle spent 42 years with the North Dakota Geological Survey, researching all facets of North Dakota geology, including mineral resources, geomorphology, stratigraphy, climate change, and public outreach. He mapped the geology of 23 of North Dakota’s 53 counties.

“It is thrilling to see so many talented authors and publishers of high quality books in the Midwest,” said Midwest Book Awards chair Sherry Roberts. “I look forward to the gala, where we will recognize the achievements of all the finalists and winners, as well as celebrating the strength and vitality of independent publishing in the Midwest.”

“North Dakota’s Geologic Legacy is available from NDSU Press, Baker & Taylor, Amazon, and other booksellers.
