NDSU to welcome students, move-in day set

NDSU is set to welcome new and returning students during move-in days, scheduled Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 19 and 20, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. First-year students are asked to check in between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Aug. 19, when volunteers will be on hand to assist.

About 3,300 students are anticipated to check in at the NDSU residence halls, which will be open and ready for them.

“We always look forward to the added energy and excitement that opening day brings to our campus,” said Rian Nostrum, Residence Life director, noting hundreds of faculty, staff and students will be on hand to assist. “It is an important transition for families and we want to aid them by ensuring a smooth move-in experience.

On Aug. 19, volunteers will greet new students, unload vehicles and carry items into residence hall rooms. Faculty and staff also will be available throughout campus to welcome students and answer questions.

Nostrum said many students will discover that NDSU’s oldest residence hall, Churchill Hall, is newly renovated. The structure was built in 1930, and a new $10 million update makes it “our newest place to live.” The entire interior was remodeled, including new mechanical systems, electrical systems, flooring and an elevator.

NDSU’s campus will see a burst of activity as new students settle in, current students filter back to campus and Welcome Week events begin.

“We’re excited to see students on campus at the start of their NDSU journey,” said Casey Peterson, director of Student Success Programs. “Welcome Week will provide many ways to make new friends, connect with opportunities and learn how this place works. The activities of move-in weekend and the first week offer the tools students will need to be successful and get the most out of their time here.”

Many Welcome Week events will take place at the Memorial Union, where the NDSU Bookstore, NDSU One Stop and other services will be open to assist new and current students.

Welcome Week kicks off Saturday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m. with the Green and Yellow Rally at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex. Incoming students will have the opportunity to experience the NDSU environment and meet up with their Welcome Week groups for the first time.

The Presidents’ Welcome, scheduled for Monday, Aug. 21, at 9:30 a.m., officially starts the academic year at Churchill Field. NDSU President Dean L. Bresciani, Provost Beth Ingram, student body president Mason Wenzel and student body vice president Katie Mastel will address the newest class of NDSU students.

Incoming freshman Dan Ukkelberg also will speak to his classmates. He is a third-generation NDSU student from Clitherall, Minnesota, who graduated from Battle Lake, Minnesota, High School. Ukkelberg received the Heritage Scholarship and First Year Textbook Scholarship from NDSU, and plans to major in agricultural communication.

In addition, academic college events required for first-year students are set to follow the Presidents’ Welcome.
