Student receives turfgrass management scholarship

SHARE

NDSU horticulture student Matthew Becker received a scholarship from the Golf Course Superintendents’ Association of America. Becker is a junior majoring in horticulture, sports and urban turfgrass management option, with a soil science minor.

The purpose of the organization’s Scholars Program is to recognize outstanding students planning careers in golf and turfgrass management. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled and have completed one year in an approved program related to golf or turfgrass management and be an association member.

Becker would like to work on a golf course turf management team and work toward becoming a golf course superintendent. He is from Savage, Minnesota.

He said he chose NDSU because “when I came to visit the campus I felt comfortable and the faculty that I met with were friendly and eager to talk about classes along with the curriculum.”

Becker’s academic adviser is Deying Li, associate professor of sports and urban turfgrass management in the Department of Plant Sciences.
