Wrestling student-athletes earn academic honors

NDSU placed 11 student-athletes on the 2019 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling team announced Feb. 21 by the conference office. There were 91 selections overall.

Tyler McNutt, a redshirt senior 184-pounder from Saint Joseph, Missouri, is a four-time Academic All-Big 12 performer. McNutt, an architecture major, was a three-time second-team pick before moving up to the first team this season.

NDSU 197-pounder Cordell Eaton from Long Grove, Iowa, and 157 Nick Knutson from New Prague, Minnesota, both registered 4.0 grade point averages the previous two semesters and were two of 10 Bison wrestlers named to the first team. Eaton is a three-time selection, while Knutson made the jump to the first team this year.

Joining McNutt, Eaton and Knutson on the first team are 125-pounder Paul Bianchi, Sawyer Degen at 141 pounds, Brandon Metz at 285-pounds, 141-pounder Taylor Nein, 174-pounder Jesse Shearer, Dan Stibral at 285 pounds and 149-pounder Gavin Sutton. Bianchi and Stibral are both two-time selections.

NDSU’s 133-pounder Cam Sykora was named to the second team.

First team members have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team picks hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
