College of Engineering hosts Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

More than 250 eighth-grade girls from nine area schools visited NDSU and area engineering companies Feb. 22 as part of Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, an event to foster an interest in science, technology, engineering and math, commonly known as STEM.

“This is one of our most exciting outreach events of the year,” said Lauren Singelmann, outreach coordinator for the NDSU College of Engineering. “It’s a chance to inspire girls and show them they have a place in engineering a better world.”

The day started at NDSU where the students met women engineering students, faculty and professionals, participated in an engineering design activity and had a question and answer session with a panel of women engineers.

Students then spent the afternoon visiting host companies Appareo, Bobcat, John Deere, KLJ, Microsoft, Moore Engineering, Myriad Mobile, Sanford Health, SRF Consulting Group Inc. and Sundog.

The students and female engineers, who serve as mentors, worked together to solve problems, learn about engineering and have fun.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is part of National Engineers Week activities celebrated nationwide. The NDSU College of Engineering uses the event as part of its outreach activities aimed at inspiring youth to consider an education and career within the STEM disciplines.
