Student receives turf grass scholarship

NDSU horticulture student Matthew Becker received a scholarship from the North Central Turf Grass Association during the group’s annual Conference and Trade Show held Feb. 26-28 in Fargo.

The scholarship program provides tuition assistance to students in a college sports turf program. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be a junior or senior with a 3.0 or higher GPA. The selection committee considers GPA, internships, references and an essay written by the student.

Becker is a junior from Savage, Minnesota, majoring in horticulture with the sports and urban turfgrass management option and minoring in soil science. After his expected graduation in spring 2020, he wants to work as a golf course assistant superintendent and eventually become a lead superintendent.

He says he chose NDSU because, “When I came to visit the campus I felt comfortable and the faculty that I met with were friendly and eager to talk about classes along with the curriculum.”

Becker’s academic adviser is Deying Li, associate professor of sports and urban turfgrass management in the Department of Plant Sciences.
