Tribal sovereignty to be second topic of Partner Series

Tribal sovereignty and its impact on tribal and surrounding communities will be the topic of the second presentation in the "Getting to Know Your Tribal Partners Seminar Series" on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Union Prairie room. Phil Baird, vice president of academic, career and technical education at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, N.D., will present this topic. 

Baird is an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe (Sicangu Lakota). He has professional experiences working in agriculture, education, economic development and tribal gaming. He earned his bachelor's degree in animal science and pre-veterinary medicine from South Dakota State University and a master’s degree in agricultural education from Iowa State University. He was named an SDSU Distinguished Alumnus for his service to education in 1997. He received an honorary doctoral degree from Sinte Gleska University in 2005. Baird has extensive experience with tribal economic and educational issues on the local, regional and national levels.

A pre-seminar reception is planned for Thursday, Jan. 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the Equity and Diversity Center.

Other dates for the series are Feb. 18, March 11 and April 8. Topics include "Women’s Impact on Tribal Higher Education," "Culture and Spirituality" and "Economy and Opportunity." The series will conclude with a tour of a reservation in late April or the beginning of May. The Tribal College-NDSU Partnership Initiative; Division of Equity, Diversity, and Global Outreach; NDSU Extension; and ADVANCE FORWARD are sponsors for the series.
