Volunteers needed for Expanding Your Horizons

SHARE

The 31st annual Expanding Your Horizons program for more than 600 young women in junior high school is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at NDSU. Organizers are seeking faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate student volunteers (both male and female) to help at the registration table in the morning, give participants their workshop assignments and information folders when they arrive at Bentson-Bunker Fieldhouse, serve as trouble shooters and to be bus riders who help chaperone the girls and assist bus drivers with directions to workshops off campus.

The program provides an opportunity for young women to spend the day at NDSU, participate in a series of hands-on workshops offered by women to illustrate the importance of science and mathematics, and introduce them to new careers. Although individual workshops may not feature science or mathematics directly, the underlying assumption is that if young women persist in their math and science courses as they enter high school, their "horizons are expanded" educationally and careerwise.

The day includes 57 workshops led by faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students who offer themselves as role models for these young women. In addition, staff and students from the campus offer their time to assist with support functions that day.

To volunteer, e-mail Karen Murie, co-coordinator of Expanding Your Horizons, at karen.murie@ndsu.edu.
