Flood fighting efforts begin

SHARE

The city of Fargo has initiated the spring 2010 flood fighting efforts by opening Sandbag Central. Volunteers are requested to assist with preparing sandbags. Sandbagging operations will continue Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the current goal of approximately 1 million sandbags is met.

NDSU students, faculty and staff who would like to volunteer for these efforts may check in at the NDSU flood support center on the main floor of the Memorial Union (near Bison Connection). Transportation to and from Sandbag Central will be provided on the hour and half hour. NDSU has made no operational changes at this time and volunteer efforts are encouraged when students are not in class.

At check-in, volunteers will be required to complete a 2010 Flood Response Volunteer Intake Form. The intake form will request basic information such as name, address, phone, emergency contact and anticipated length of shift. The form also contains an acknowledgment and assumption of risk waiver and release of liability statement that volunteers must read and agree to. This form must be completed for each volunteer shift.

Members of organizations participating in the Bucks for Bags program must also indicate the name of the organization they represent. To receive credit for volunteer hours, the organization name must be clearly identified on the intake form.

There also is a need for volunteers to assist with staffing the NDSU flood support center on the main floor of the Memorial Union, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Responsibilities include providing information, facilitating the check-in of volunteers, data entry and miscellaneous support functions. Call 1-7870 or stop by the flood support center to sign up.
