  • Who: 30 children ranging from 18 months to 5 years of age from the NDSU Center for Child Development raised money and purchased bread for members of the Salvation Army to make sandwiches for Fargo-Moorhead flood volunteers.
  • The numbers: three vans, $195 in donations from parents, $50 in donations from Hornbacher's grocery store, one field trip to pick up and deliver 163 loaves of bread.
  • A lesson learned: Deb Habedank, director of the center, says the children learned about different aspects of the flood such as the river, sandbagging and surrounding areas. "We talked about families who were affected by the flood and the children experienced the importance of sharing with others and how it can have greater benefits than receiving," she said. "The children learned that everyone can make a difference, no matter what their size."
  • A parent's view: "Volunteering is something they need to learn about. No matter what size or age they are, they can help out." -Tammy Helweg
