NDSU Alumni Association presents awards

The North Dakota State University Alumni Association has announced the 2009 recipients of the Alumni Achievement Award, Henry L. Bolley Academic Achievement Award, Heritage Award and Horizon Award. The awards will be presented at the 2009 NDSU Alumni Honors dinner on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Fargo Holiday Inn. All alumni and university friends are welcome to attend. The Alumni Honors social will begin at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and the awards presentation.

Alumni Achievement Award

Darryle D. Schoepp, BS '78, pharmacy, is the recipient of the NDSU Alumni Achievement Award which is given to alumni who have excelled in their profession. Schoepp earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from NDSU in 1978 and a doctoral degree in pharmacology and toxicology from West Virginia University in 1982. He is senior vice president and franchise head for neuroscience at Merck and Company. Prior to that, Schoepp was vice president of neuroscience discovery research at Eli Lilly and Company. His research career has focused on glutamate receptor pharmacology, where he has led pioneering efforts to discover and investigate novel agents for psychiatric and neurological disorders. He has published more than 200 papers and reviews and is an inventor of 14 U.S. patents in the glutamate area.

 

Henry L. Bolley Academic Achievement Award

Bradley J. Undem, BS '79, pharmacy, is this year's recipient of the Henry L. Bolley Academic Achievement Award, which recognizes the achievements of alumni who work in education as teachers, researchers and administrators. Undem is a full professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is an internationally renowned authority on

pulmonary pharmacology and neurophysiology. Undem has published more than 200 refereed manuscripts, review articles and book chapters. He has served on the editorial board of 10 biomedical journals. Undem has consulted with more than 20 pharmaceutical and biotech firms in addition to serving as a founding board member of a start-up biotech company. He has mentored 25 graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and is a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health.

Heritage Award

This year, the NDSU Alumni Association is presenting the Heritage Award to William (Bill) Grosz and Ray and Bev Horne. The Heritage Award signifies outstanding volunteer service to NDSU.

Grosz, BS '51, pharmacy, also received a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa from NDSU in 1990 and has been a member of the NDSU College of Pharmacy Advisory Board since 2007. Grosz also has been an advisory board member of the NDSU Research Foundation. He has played an integral role in helping raise funds for the NDSU College of Pharmacy including serving as a member of the College Building Excellence Steering Committee which helped raise $2.5 million for a new building addition to Sudro Hall. In 1977, Grosz received the NDSU Alumni Achievement Award. He has been an active member of Team Makers and served on NDSU's Arizona Week planning committee. Grosz retired as the executive director of the North Dakota State Board of Pharmacy in 1997.

Ray Horne, BS '55, agricultural economics, was a member of the NDSU Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1996 to 2005 and has served as president of the NDSU Agriculture Club. Bev Horne, BS '55, home economics, ME '82, counseling and guidance, was a member of the NDSU College of Home Economics Board of Visitors from 1985 to 1992. She

has served on past NDSU presidential search committees and was named Devils Lake (N.D.) Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Person of the Year for helping to promote NDSU to area high school students. For the past six years, Ray and Bev have coordinated many events and activities and secured student lodging for NDSU Arizona Week. They have helped facilitate NDSU staff and faculty visits to the Devils Lake area and have served on the Ramsey County NDSU Alumni Board. Ray and Bev are members of NDSU's Bronze Medallion Society and President's Circle. The couple is retired and spend time at their homes in Sun City, Devils Lake and Fargo.

Horizon Award

Monte Fox, BS '99, corporate and community fitness, is this year's recipient of the Horizon Award. The Horizon Award places emphasis on the recognition of individuals who have graduated in the past 10 years and have distinguished themselves in their professional field and service to their community.

Fox has developed health programs on the White Earth Indian Reservation that have achieved national recognition in the areas of diabetes and obesity lifestyle changes. While serving as tribal health director for the White Earth Indian Reservation, Fox has created fitness centers with state-of-the-art equipment, trained staff (including a dietitian), nutrition counseling and weight management classes for White Earth Nation members. He has worked with NDSU to develop a video game for youth incorporating traditional dance exercises for diabetes prevention education. Fox is a 2007 recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson Community Leader Award and 2003 recipient of the Award of Excellence from the Minnesota Council of Physical Activity and Sports.
