NDSU Winter Commencement – Mathew Justin's campus inspiration

SHARE

Student: Mathew Justin, history and mechanical engineering

Inspiration: Chad Ulven, professor of mechanical engineering

Graduating senior Mathew Justin says the enthusiasm and dedication of Chad Ulven, professor of mechanical engineering, helped him pick his career path.

“Dr. Ulven and his Material Science and Engineering course are the reasons I chose the industry I am going into,” said Justin, who is from New Brighton, Minnesota. “Dr. Ulven is passionate about his work and loves to showcase that passion for students by making the material enjoyable and applicable. He never stops advocating for students, and he’s teaching an absurd amount of classes this semester because everyone wants to take his courses.”

Ulven’s willingness to debate topics and push engineering boundaries impressed Justin, as did his goal of helping students succeed both in the classroom and in the workplace.

“Dr. Ulven knows what’s it’s like to be on the plant floor, in a facility or on the job. He truly defined to me what it means to be an engineer,” Justin said. “His passion inspired me to look into manufacturing for my internships, which led to my full-time position.”

Future plans: Justin has accepted a position as an associate engineer for Cargill Inc. at the company’s facility in Monticello, Minnesota.
