NDSU Winter Commencement – Bailey Gillis' campus inspiration

SHARE

Student: Bailey Gillis, biological sciences

Inspiration: Craig Stockwell, professor of biological sciences

As she approaches graduation, Bailey Gillis points to Craig Stockwell’s guidance and giving nature as the reasons for her success. Gillis has worked in the research laboratory of the professor of biological sciences for more than two years; it’s an experience she will never forget.

“Our entire lab is very close, and Dr. Stockwell always has students’ best interests in mind,” said Gillis, who is from Rochester, Minnesota. “He’s been continuously generous with his time and with his funding – that is an inspiration to me. I want to be that kind of person.”

Stockwell has encouraged Gillis to pursue her research interests, and he’s recognized her potential as a researcher. That kindness has boosted her confidence.

“He’s been very helpful putting me in contact with people he knows to help me succeed – he’s put in a good word for me time and time again. He’s done everything in his power to help me.

“I will take into my career the supportive nature he’s instilled in me,” Gillis said. “Sometimes, I’m prone to doubt myself, but he’s continually reminded me that I’m more capable than I think I am. He’s pushed me to the point where I know I can do anything.”

Future plans: Gillis hopes to go to graduate school to study the biology of mammals.
