Jo Ann Miller, NDSU director of choral activities, was the guest conductor for the Minnesota All-State Mixed Choir which performed during the Minnesota Music Educators Association midwinter clinic Feb.13-15.

MMEA All-State is considered one of the top programs of its kind in the nation as it develops high school musicians and school music programs. The All-State program supports secondary school music ensembles, MMEA members and members’ students.

Students attend camp in August where they meet their guest conductor and attend rehearsals and sectionals. The major focus during the summer camp is developing advanced technique and making music, but there also is a full schedule of recreation and social activities. After an August concert, the young musicians meet again in February to perform at Orchestra Hall as part of the MMEA midwinter clinic.

Miller has been director of choral activities at NDSU since 1989. She conducts the NDSU Concert Choir and teaches courses in conducting and choral literature.

She earned her bachelor’s degree at NDSU, master’s degree from the University of North Dakota and her doctorate at the University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music.
