David Kramar has joined NDSU as a precision agriculture specialist based at the Carrington Research Extension Center.

He has a joint research and Extension appointment, with about 60 percent of his time devoted to the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and 40 percent to Extension.

He will be responsible for implementing research projects related to precision agriculture technologies and providing resource information to agriculture and natural resources Extension agents and producers.

"I am excited to have David join the Carrington Research Extension Center and look forward to his collaborations with the diverse disciplines of our other project leaders as we collectively work to advance the practical applications of this technology for the benefit of our farmers and ranchers," said Blaine Schatz, center director.

Kramar earned his doctorate in geospatial and environmental analysis at Virginia Tech in 2014.

He brings more than 20 years of experience in the geospatial industry and has worked in the public, private and nonprofit sectors before transitioning into education. He was a visiting assistant professor in environmental science and policy at Southern Oregon University and a geosciences faculty member at Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Kramar also has extensive experience in remote sensing and analysis of high-resolution imagery, as well as a sound understanding of machine learning and statistical analysis.

"I am looking forward to establishing collaborations and relationships with the Extension constituents," Kramar said. "Spatial technologies and how we manage the data derived from these technologies are already a large part of precision agriculture and will continue to be so as our technologies advance. I am excited to have the opportunity to play a role in how we utilize and develop these technologies moving forward. From GIS and remote sensing to blockchain technology, I see the role of spatial technologies, as a whole, to be critical to agriculture in the future."
