NDSU Press publishes book of poetry by retired NDSU faculty member

NDSU Press has announced its latest published work of poetry – “His Feathers Were Chains,” by Denise K. Lajimodiere, retired associate professor in the NDSU School of Education.

The 104-page book is Lajimodiere's second collection of poetry published by NDSU Press. It is available from NDSU Press, Baker and Taylor, Amazon and independent bookstores.

The collection is divided into five sections: Broken Glass Dreams, Identity, His Feathers Were Chains, Thin White Heat and Dancing with a Whirlwind.

Lajimodiere is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, Belcourt, North Dakota. She has been involved in education for 44 years as an elementary teacher, principal and faculty member. She earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the University of North Dakota.

Lajimodiere is one of the founders of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition, and she also is a traditional jingle dress dancer and Ojibwe birch Bark biting artist.

Her previous historical work, “Stringing Rosaries: The History, the Unforgivable and the Healing of Northern Plains American Indian Boarding School Survivors,” has won honors from the Midwest Independent Publishers Association, Independent Publisher Book Awards and was a finalist in the 2020 Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize.
