NDSU renames research greenhouse to honor former governor

North Dakota State University’s North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Research Greenhouse has been renamed the John Stewart Dalrymple III Agricultural Research Greenhouse.

The name change was approved last week by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. The renaming honors Jack Dalrymple, the 32nd Governor of North Dakota, NDSU’s 2017 Harvest Bowl Agribusiness Award recipient and NDSU Foundation Life Trustee.

“Jack Dalrymple is known across the nation as a leader in agriculture,” said NDSU President Dean L. Bresciani. “NDSU is pleased to honor his accomplishments by renaming the NDAES Research Greenhouse Complex, which allows researchers to proactively examine diseases in plants up to 30 years in advance.”

During Dalrymple’s time as governor, he shepherded the funding and completion of the Agricultural Experiment State Research Greenhouse Complex at NDSU. The $33.5 million building was funded with state funds and private donations. The project was completed in 2015.

The state-of-the-art facility was designed to meet the needs of plant research at NDSU, providing enhanced education and advanced research in plant breeding, genetics, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, plant nutrition and associated disciplines.

The greenhouse complex has expanded research capabilities to benefit producers and business through increased productivity and sales. It also has helped attract and retain top-ranked scientists and educators involved in cutting edge research and teaching. The facility has further enhanced graduate student research and provided training for highly skilled professionals in the workforce.

NDSU is a land-grant, research university and the activities in the NDAES Research Greenhouse Complex are consistent with its teaching, research and public service responsibilities, especially in regards to agriculture. Agriculture aligns with the needs and core values of North Dakota.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
