Three former faculty members in the NDSU College of Health Professions died in recent weeks. They include Doreen Sayler, Edward Magarian and Robert E. Nelson.
Sayler was a former faculty member in the NDSU Concept Pharmacy, a preceptor for NDSU pharmacy students in Valley City, North Dakota, and a 1985 graduate of NDSU. She died Nov. 7 at 60 years of age.
Sayler opened Central Avenue Pharmacy in Valley City in 1989. She received the Health Mart Community Excellence award and other business awards, such as the Hi-Line Award and Melvin Jones Fellow Award.
“Preceptors such as Doreen Sayler help prepare future pharmacists,” said Charles D. Peterson, dean of the School of Pharmacy and College of Health Professions. “She provided students with professional experiences that will prepare them to become members of the healthcare team.”
Magarian, a former faculty member in the School of Pharmacy from 1971 to 2005, died Nov. 6 at age 86. He lived in Fargo.
Magarian was voted Teacher of the Year several times during his NDSU career. He also was faculty adviser for the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity chapter in the School of Pharmacy.
“We are fortunate to have had dedicated faculty such as Ed Magarian to make a difference in the lives of so many pharmacy students,” said Peterson.
Robert E. Nelson, former assistant professor in the NDSU School of Pharmacy from 1998-2011, died Oct. 25 at 49 years of age. He lived in Naperville, Illinois.
He was twice named Teacher of the Year by students. Nelson was a clinical pharmacy manager at Sanford Health (previously known as MeritCare) from 2004-2011. He worked at Amgen for eight years in various roles including director for External Medical Engagement, medical director for the U.S. Neurosciences Platform and medical science liaison.
“His contributions to our pharmacy program were significant and he was an outstanding practitioner, teacher and person,” Peterson said.
