Dozens of colorful T-shirts will be strung on a clothesline in the Memorial Union Gallery April 3-13.

The installation is called the Clothesline Project, one of approximately 500 projects to be displayed nationally and internationally to acknowledge the problem of violence against women.

All the T-shirts in the NDSU installation—more than 100—have been decorated by NDSU students, faculty and staff who have been affected by sexual or relationship violence, said Sarah Dodd, assistant director for sexual assault prevention programming.

To add a shirt to the installation, students are invited to pick up a T-shirt at the Office of Student Life in Memorial Union from March 26 to April 13, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shirt-making sessions will be hosted by the Diversity Ambassadors on March 28 and the women and gender studies department on March 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Equity and Diversity Center.

The Clothesline Project was started in 1990 by a group of women in Cape Cod, Mass., to give women who have been affected by sexual and relationship violence a way to express their emotions.

The Clothesline Project is one of the events sponsored by NDSU’s Sexual Assault Prevention Program for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
