The day begins at 9 a.m. with a welcome by an aide to U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp.

Topics for the day include:

  • Establishing a container or community garden
  • Fruit variety trials
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Perennials for all seasons

The day ends with a tour of the community gardens from 2:10 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The workshop is free and lunch can be purchased at the center.

Jason Goltz, NDSU Extension Richland County agent, and Todd Weinmann, NDSU Extension Cass County horticulturist, have been working with the American Legion post.

"We planted a vegetable variety trial plot and moved a youth garden to the center that was established for the Hankinson Elementary School," says Goltz. "Plans are to also have a veterans memorial built at the site."
