North Dakota Loan Forgiveness Programs

STEM Occupations Loan Forgiveness Program

This program is intended to reduce loan indebtedness for college graduates who are employed in STEM-related occupations in North Dakota. These include jobs in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Amount:
Recipients of this program receive loan forgiveness of up to $1,500 for each year they are employed in North Dakota in an approved occupation for up to four years with a maximum lifetime award of $6,000.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have successfully completed a board-approved STEM-related program at an approved college and maintained a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grading system;
  • Hold a qualifying federal student loan and not be in default on that loan;
  • Have been employed in a board-approved STEM occupation for 12 months in North Dakota following graduation.

Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness Program

This program is intended to reduce loan indebtedness for individuals who teach in North Dakota at grade levels and/or in content areas identified as having teacher shortages.

Amount:
Recipients of this program receive loan forgiveness of up to $1,000 for each year they teach in a teacher shortage area with a maximum lifetime award of $5,000.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Hold a qualified license, endorsement, or credential to teach at a grade level or in a content area identified as having a teacher shortage;
  • Hold a qualifying federal student loan and not be in default on that loan;
  • Be licensed by the Education Standards and Practices Board in North Dakota in the teaching shortage area;
  • Teach in a teacher shortage area identified by the Department of Public Instruction;
  • Teach in a Department of Public Instruction approved public or private primary or secondary school in North Dakota.
