Avenues of Scientific Discovery

Information for middle & high school participants.

Participant Information

This Avenues of Scientific Discovery conference will be a day filled with hands-on workshops to introduce you to different careers in the various fields of science, technology, engineering and math. We encourage you to connect with as many people as possible at this conference. There will be many opportunities to meet students from NDSU who share your interest in these careers. We also encourage you to get to know the graduate students in the workshops you really enjoyed, they are a wealth of knowledge about the subject. Trust us, these graduate students want to know that you are interested in their topic and/or field of study!

#AOSD - Share the excitement for what you learned in each session using #aosd on your social media accounts.

Reminders for the Event

Please read through the following list to ensure you're ready for a fun day of discovery and learning!

1. Print off the liability waiver and have your parent/guardian sign it: All attendees under the age of 18 will need a printed and signed release form/liability waiver. Once the form is printed off, a parent or guardian will need to read it and sign it. Students must bring the signed waiver along in order to participate in the workshops and booths for the event.

2. If you cannot drive and you're not attending with a school, make sure you have a ride to drop you off and pick you up: There is a link to a map of campus that shows where parents can drop off/pick up students. Chaperones at the event will make sure that students who are not a part of school groups are not waiting by themselves at drop off and pick up.

3. Think about what you should wear: Since students will be working with all sorts of different materials, make sure that you are not wearing baggy clothing that can get in the way or get caught on something. For students with long hair, we encourage you to put your hair up and out of the way with hair ties, hats, etc. As long as your hair is not in your face and hanging where it can catch in something, you will be good to go! View our What to Wear section for a little more information.

4. Think about what workshops you want to join: There is a list of workshops on our website that indicates the recommended grade level(s) and a general description of what students can expect. Please be sure to look at the list of workshops and pick out your top choices, as well as some backup choices in case workshops fill up.

5. Come to the event and explore: Once you have checked all the things off this list, you are good to go! Whether you are coming with other students or are attending alone, there will be plenty of people to meet and science to explore, so come explore STEM with us!

What to Wear

You will be walking around the NDSU campus. Due to the scientific experiments being conducted there are specific clothing requirements.

  • Comfortable closed toe shoes and long pants are required.
  • Dress for comfort but ensure that you do not have excessively loose clothing.
  • If you have long hair, please bring a hair tie to ensure your hair does not get in the way of the experiments.
  • These are hands-on workshops, so please wear clothing you would wear for working on projects.
  • The event will supply lab coats, goggles, and other safety equipment as needed.
