Guest Performance: Phil Rukavina, lute
Mr. Rukavina will be giving a multi-media demonstration and performance (at 7:30pm) on four different early plucked-string instruments rarely heard in the Fargo-Moorhead area: the vihuela, the Renaissance guitar, the six-course lute, and the seven-course lute. Entitled "A Grand Tour," this program is divided into four sections, each featuring the music for Renaissance plucked-string instruments from various European localities. These include Italy (with the six-course lute), Spain and Naples (with the vihuela and viola da mano), France (with the Renaissance four-course guitar), and England (with the seven-course lute). Mr. Rukavina will be demonstrating and performing on each of these historical instruments, and he will be discussing particular aspects and contexts of music-making on these instruments in Renaissance-era Europe.
The pieces we will hear in his performance include several "firsts" in Western musical practice, with music Vincenzo Capirola (1474-after 1548), Francesco Canova da Milano (1497-1543), Luis Milan (ca. 1500-1560), Luis de Narváez (fl. 1526-49), Alonso Mudarra (ca. 1510-1580), John Dowland (1563-1626), and several others. This program will also feature Renaissance lute duets, performed on lute by Mr. Rukavina and Annett Richter, and performed in transcription for classical guitar by two guitar duos with NDSU students Chris Argenziano and Eric Martens, and with Cole Bishop and Jerry Rosin.
