Saxophone Quartets Place First in Competition

The NDSU Gold Star Saxophone Quartet recently placed first in the North Dakota round of the Music Teacher’s National Association (MTNA) Collegiate Chamber Music Competition. Under the direction of Dr. Matthew Patnode, the ensemble consists of:
- Michael Bartunek, senior music education major from Grafton, ND
- Jon Ellwein, senior music and agriculture major from Hazen, ND
- Christopher Schuster, senior music education major from Fargo, ND
- Antoine Poitras, senior music education major from Fargo, ND
The Gold Star Saxophone Quartet will now compete in the Midwest Central Division to be held at the University of Colorado-Boulder in January 2012. If they place first in this competition, they will proceed to the national finals, which will be held in New York City in March 2012. In 2003 and 2006, two NDSU saxophone quartets have proceeded to the national round of competition, placed third in 2006.
Additionally, Carolyn Braus (junior, instrumental performance major from Bismarck, ND), saxophone, placed first in the North Dakota round of the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition. This solo competition is for woodwind musicians between the ages of 19 and 26. Braus studies with Dr. Matthew Patnode and will now compete at the regional level in January at the University of Colorado-Boulder.
