NDSU Opera Theatre to present “The Mikado”
A deliciously silly opera by Gilbert and Sullivan!
The NDSU Opera Theatre is proud to present The Mikado, the popular operetta by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, May 4-6 in Festival Concert Hall.
The setting of The Mikado is the town of Titipu, where Ko-Ko the tailor (played by Elliot Schwab) has not yet executed anyone since his appointment as Lord High Executioner. Additionally, the woman he plans to marry, Yum-Yum (played by Ashton Foreman), has fallen in love with Nanki-Poo (played by Tyler Raad), who is disguised as a traveling musician but is actually the son of the Mikado and has managed to escape the court to avoid the attentions of the older noblewoman, Katisha (Caitlin Monroe). To add to Ko-Ko’s frustration, the Mikado (played by Mike Fairbairn) tells him he must execute someone within a month or the city will lose its rank, which would be disastrous. Not surprisingly, nobody volunteers to be executed and complications occur with the arrival of the Mikado and Katisha.
The Mikado will be performed in English; directed by Dr. Michael Weber.
