Student Engagement

Student engagement entails a willingness to participate and make an investment in one's own learning. There is both a psychological and behavioral component, which can translate into motivation, improved retention and a greater participation in the creation of course content.

Student Projects
When students create something as they learn, the "knowledge of the creator" is deeper and better retained. The Technology Learning and Media Center (TLMC) staff work with faculty to define and implement successful student technology projects such as movies, web sites, posters, infographics, presentations and portfolios.

Clickers
Using clickers in the classroom helps students stay focused. They also give valuable real-time feedback to instructors on how well the students understand.

Blackboard Tools
Bb Social Tools provide varied student engagement:
  • Blogs: A shared online diary - can be used for online discussions.
  • Wikis: A collaborative space where all students can view, contribute and edit content - can be used for group research projects.
  • Journals: Like Blogs, but personal between the instructor and each student.
  • Discussion Board: Like Blogs, but with more structure.
