Epigenetic Mechanisms Regulating Cancer Growth and Apoptosis

Using tools of molecular and cell biology, we study how cancer cells develop apoptosis resistance and out-of-control growth as they progress from benign state to malignant cancer. Our research focuses on the epigenetic action and regulation by novel oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, and tumor-suppressing microRNAs. Combining basic research and translational studies, we try to understand the role of these epigentic regulators in human cancers.

Targeting the Epigenetic Mechanisms for Cancer Therapy

We are developing novel therapeutic agents that can epigenetically activate the expression of tumor suppressor genes to inhibit cancer growth. In collaboration with experts in the fields of nanomedicine and drug delivery systems, we also work on delivery of therapeutic RNAs and small molecule drugs selectively to the cancer cells. Using both in vitro studies and mouse models, we try to improve the therapeutic efficacy of chemotherapy and develop new strategies to track down and eliminate cancer metastasis.
