Student Views of Art/Creative Writing

1) This is a hard question, though I suppose that's why you ask it. Because who's to say an AP reporter writing about an election or natural disaster isn't being creative? Creative writing to me is any piece of writing that says something more than just what the words on the page say. It gives something to the reader: an image, a memory, a feeling, an emotion. It expresses something more than just what the words mean. I've always thought the highest and simplest goal of art is to make connections between people, to bring us (humanity) closer together, to add a little more understanding to what it means to be human. Art is about finding and examining the qualities that transcend time and place and reflect something innate within all people

2) Creative writing is using your imagination to write literature.  Creative writing and art are ways for people to express their creativity and their emotions.

3) Art is one of the most powerful descriptors we have to sell ourselves. Art is expression; Expression of joy, of anger, of jealousy, of love, of everything we are, of everything we're not.  It's a glimpse into one's soul and a taste of what is personal.  It's what moves us and defines us and allows us the freedom to be unique.  That's my statement and I may or may not be sticking to it.

4) What I think of creative writing is it's just that. It's being creative with much freedom in your writing. As a writer I have always gotten much ambition when I am allowed to put on paper whatever I please. With some guidelines obviously, but the way to word things and how to present it being entirely up to me is a great feeling. Because of this feeling this course creates much excitement for me.

5) As for writing, i find i write a lot of things geared towards children and young adults. I have spent the last many years making up the bed time stories i tell my children rather then reading them from a book and the natural course was then to start writing them down on paper. I have a couple ideas for some adolescent/young adult novels but find mostly i write short stories. Before having children i work quite a bit of poetry but haven't tinkered much in that genre in years.

6) I think that art and creative writing are great, most of the time. I've seen the work of some Landscape Artists who make something beautiful, but very unpractical and it makes me a little art-frustrated. Creative writing is what got me through the semester break.  Fall semester I completed an 85 page research document on healing gardens.  I was so sick of reasearch o.and typing and trying to sound smarter than I am and trying not to plagerize (SP??).  When I got home I just read for fun and it was great. I like the way that art and creative writing are enjoyed by their creators and the people that read or use or look at the final product.  You can't say that about a research paper!

7) When I think about how I feel about creative writing and art in general, I come to one conclusion.  Both are deeply personal reflections of one's heart and imagination. I feel that the world would be a drab and hopeless place without the ability to express one's dreams and innovations.  I think of Jules Verne and his ability to dream up deep sea diving and world-wide travel long before mankind believed in such possibilities.  Without creative minds like his to spark the idea, to speak the dream, to envision the consequences, man would have no ambition to better understand himself or his world.  Truely we as humans are fotunate to possess such a precious ability.

8) I think creative writing is an attempt to put your expressions and feelings onto paper in a way that is enjoyable for others to read. I think it is a very important part of any education because no matter what you do in life at some time you will have to tell someone what you think or how you feel, and so many people now days can not express themselves in the way they would like to. I took this class because I have taken three other english classes and I really wanted to be able to write my own way. I do not like the constraints that a writing assignment so often comes with. I figured that creative writing would be more about exploring my own expressions.

9) I think creative writing is writing fictional work that is created in the imagination of the writer.  It is for people to read and enjoy, learn from, or get lost into.

10) I view creative writing as an outlet of internal thoughts, feelings, and ideas.  An individual's persona can be seen through reading the works they produce.  Most people writing about things they are interested in, are afraid of, or dream about.  I use my own writing as a stress reliever and way of expressing agressions and celebrations without needing someone else to watch over me.

11) Creative writing can be any writing that creativity is used to develop. In the broad sense, this doesn't exclude much, but usually it refers to writing fiction, poetry, or nonfiction in a descriptive way or with a certain style.  Basically, anything goes - creative writing can be anything you want.  It usually involves letting the reader into a part of your mind, more than general or scientific writing.  Creative writing, and art in general, exists for several purposes:  for the artist to have an outlet for emotions, ideas, and creativity, to connect people who view artwork in similar ways, and to be uplifting or inspiratioinal to those who view it.  It seems that good art or writing generally makes us feel good in some way, even if it's a sad story.

12) [Creative Writing] serves as a conduit for many people to express the emotions that cause them to feel anger, joy, love, frustration, confusion, or any combination of those and many more. By sharing those emotions or stories with an audience, the writer is hoping that whoever reads it will be sparked by his or her words and be able to relate or simply enjoy. The most important part of creative writing to me though, must be that the imagination can take you wherever you want with this type of writing. That is something that cannot be done in a technical report, a set of instructions, or many of the other forms of written material.

13) Creative writing is any writing that is an outlet for someone.  I think it and any other art is to give expression to a particular human emotion or thought.

14) Creative writing is writing what is in your mind at that time.  You need to dig deep into you imagination and let your mind wander and see what you come up with and then put it on paper.  Creative writing is for all people and it is just another way of expressing your true self to people that might now know you as well.

15) To me, creative writing is being able to write something truly original, something born from your imagination.  My first love is a good piece of fiction, so I'm really looking forward to writing some, since all my college writing up to this point has been non-fiction.  I also love poetry, the idea of breaking something down to its most basic elements intruiges me.  I'm really looking forward to what this class has to offer.

16) I do not believe I can actually form a firm opinion about the purpose of  creative writing. I suppose writing has always been my escape from reality. Some would argue that writing should be used to inform and  captivate its readers, all the while intriguing its critics, but I feel I   have to disagree on that perspective. Not all writing needs to be read by   anyone other than the author, and if it is, hopefully, it will do nothing   but pose as a release for that specific reader. Some people practice escapism through drugs; I choose words.
