"Physics at the Neutron Dripline:
The MoNA Project and the NSCL"
Professor Bryan Luther
Department of Physics

The study of nuclei far from stability can give us new insights into the
forces between nucleons as well as a greater understanding of the processes
by which the elements are formed in stellar environments. Recent upgrades
at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) combined with
new detectors are greatly expanding our ability to study these systems. A
new high efficiency neutron detector known as MoNA (Modular Neutron Array)
is being built by a collaboration of nine colleges and universities
(including Concordia College) to take advantage of the new capabilities of
the NSCL. The design and testing of and research motivation for the MoNA
project will be discussed.
