Brachystola magna (Girard)

Plains lubber grasshopper

Adults

  • Body length > 4 cm.
  • Prnotum rugose and tuberculate above.
  • Pronotum with evenly diverging lateral carinae.
  • Tegmina short, round.
  • Lobes of hind femur of equal size. (Upper lobe larger in all other 'hoppers).
  • Hind tibia with two apical calcariae (spurs) and an apical spine on outerface- all other 'hoppers lack the spine.
Nymphs
  • Prnotum rugose and tuberculate above.
    • With evenly diverging lateral carinae.
  • Lobes of hind femur of equal size. (Upper lobe larger in all other 'hoppers).
  • Hind tibia with two apical calcariae (spurs) and an apical spine on outerface- all other 'hoppers lack the spine.
  • Lateral carina black with a yellow to orange stripe mesad.
  • Anterior and posterior margins of pronotum white.
