Adults

  • Post-ocular band is a black patch on prozona only.
    • Not interrupted by pale spots.
  • Outer face of hind femur banded.
  • Inner face of hind femur yellow, orange ventrally.
  • Hind tibia blue.
  • Male cercus a 'turned-in boot.'
  • Furculae very short.
  • Ovipositor with a dorsal tooth.
  • Adults in late Spring and early summer.
Nymphs
  • Eye with conspicuous broad dark band with pale edges.
  • Post-ocular band and lateral crescent usually reduced to short dashes on prozona.
  • Hind femur with interrupted traces of dark bands.
  • Appear earlier in Spring than other species of Melanoplus.
