Adults

  • Pale stripe from eye to end of pronotum.
  • Hind tibia usually blue, rarely glaucus or pink.
  • Male cercus spatulate, as broad at base as apex.
  • Subanal plate triangular with a rounded tubecle at apex.
  • Ovipositor with a dorsal tooth.
  • Cannot be separated in the field with certainty from Melanoplus foedus.
    • Aedeagus without protruding right angled flange.
    • A species of disturbed ground, crop and rangeland.
Nymphs
  • Grass green or brown.
  • Body surface with black flecks.
  • Cannot be reliably separated from M. foedus in the field.
