Sphinx eremitus (Hübner 1823)

Common name: Hermit sphinx.

Hodges #: 7796.

Identification: Rfw 32 mm, hw black at base and before fringe.  Abdomen with alternating black and cream white lateral spots.

Similar species: 7807, 7810, 7811.1-- see key.

Distribution: Temperate areas of eastern U.S, north into southern Canada in the Great Plains.

Hosts: Larvae feed on Labiaceae-- Mints: Lycopis sp.-- Bugleweed, Mentha sp.-- Mint, Monarda sp.-- Beebalm, and Salvia sp. -- Sage.
