Included Species:

alatus Distant, 1900
bicolor Distant, 1909
brevirostris Stål, 1871
humeralis (Thunberg, 1783)
longirostris Stål, 1871

nigridens Stål, 1871
patulus Breddin, 1904
plagiatus (Walker, 1867)
poseiden Kirkaldy, 1909

Key to Rhynchocoris species

1      Dorsal surface of head nearly completely black; pronotum distinctly bicolored, anterior third ochraceous, posterior two-thirds black (Celebes)

bicolor Distant

-       Dorsal surface of head mostly ochraceous, with a few minor black markings; pronotum not bicolored, with at most black punctures and markings confined to humeral angles and along anterlateral margins

2

2(1)  Anterolateral pronotal margins, each with a thin black line along entire length from humeral apex to base of head

3

-       Black line on anterolateral pronotal margins confined to apical third

4

3(2)   Mesosternal process produced downward and anteriorly apically; humeral angles large and robust; head only feebly narrowed in front of eyes

patulus Breddin

-        Mesosternal process roundly truncate, apex not produced downward or forward; humeral angles more narrow and acuminate; head distinctly narrowed in front of eyes (Philippines)

brevirostris Stål

4(2)   Lateral margins of head black

5

-        Lateral margins of head concolorous with rest of head

8

5(4)   Humeral angles acute, but not spinose, relatively weakly produced (Philippines)

nigridens Stål

-        Humeral angles spinose, strongly produced

6

6(5)   Lateral margins of head subparallel, apex more broadly rounded; antennal segments II-V black (Borneo)

new species 1

-        Lateral margins of head more tapering, apex narrowly rounded; antennal segments II and III variable, but often brownish (India)

7

7(6)   Lateral spines of last abdominal segment distinctly larger than those on other abdominal segments; antennal segments II and III usually brownish; rostrum reaching onto base of abdomen

plagiatus (Walker)

-       Lateral spines of last abdominal segment nearly the same size as those on other abdominal segments; antennal segments II and II usually black; rostrum not reaching onto base of abdomen

alatus Distant

8(4)   Lateral margins of head subparallel, apex more broadly rounded; rostrum relatively short, reaching onto base of 4th (3rd visible) abdominal segment; mesosternal process roundly truncate apically (southeast Asia, China)

new species (or might be margininotatus Breddin)

-        Lateral margins of head more tapering, apex narrowly rounded; rostrum relatively long, reaching to near apex of abdomen; mesosternal process triangular or hook-shaped apically

9

9(8)   Humeral angles narrowly spinose, mesosternal process distinctly hook-shaped

poseidon Kirkaldy (prob. = longirostris StDl)

-        Humeral angles rather robust, apex acute and directed posteriorly; mesosternal process subtriangularly produced apically, not hook-shaped

humeralis (Thunberg)
